If you’re dealing with a mold problem or think that you may have mold in your home, it’s important to understand what kinds of mold are out there and how they can affect you. Knowing the difference between a very dangerous mold and a typical mold can save the life of you or anyone in your family. These are the types of mold that we most commonly find in residential areas.

Alternaria

This is one of the more common types of molds that are found both indoors and outdoors. This type of mold usually occurs in damp areas of the home including your sink, shower, or dark areas outside your home. Prolonged exposure to this type of mold can result in asthma attacks and allergic reactions.

Aspergillus

This type of mold is common in indoor environments. It’s dangerous to those with respiratory conditions and can cause respiratory infections, allergic reactions, and inflamed lungs.

Aureobasidium

This type of mold is often found on wood. That means that it is most commonly found on indoor furniture, surfaces, painted walls, and in and around windows. This mold looks like a spotty substance and is pink and black in color. It can cause severe allergic reactions.

Chaetomium

This type of mold is found in the drywall that has been through water damage. You will want to be on the lookout for this mold if your home has experienced flooding or other water damage in rooms that have drywall. You can typically tell that its present by its smell, which is quite strong.

Cladosporium

Cladosporium is a mound found inside a variety of areas. It is frequently found in the carpet, wood floorboards, wooden cabinets, and areas with older fabrics. Exposure to this type of mold can leave residents with various breathing problems or respiratory infections.

Fusarium

In contrast with other types of mold, Fusarium actually prefers a colder, wetter area to grow. The most common homes to grow this type of mold are homes with carpeted areas and fabric throughout the home. Fusarium can cause allergy problems in those who inhale it and can also incite respiratory infections.
